Channahon Real Estate and Community Information
History
Before the first non-native settlers arrived, the Channahon and Minooka area was inhabited by the Pottawatomi - whose language is reflected in the name of both villages.
The area attracted settlers with its abundant supply of water and timber, and travel was facilitated by the old Sauk Trail and the Des Plaines, DuPage and Kankakee rivers.
Located where the DuPage, Des Plaines and Kankakee rivers meet to form the Illinois River, the name Channahon (derived from a Pottawatomi word that means "meeting of the waters") literally reflects its location. Channahon attracted its first non-native settlers in the 1830s, and was incorporated in 1961
