History

Homer Glen is a suburban Chicago village located in Homer Township, Will County, Illinois. As of a 2004 special census, the village had a total population of 24,083. The village was incorporated on 7 April 2001.

Homer Glen and the surrounding Homer Township have a combined population of 35,000. Homer Glen was incorporated in the Spring of 2001. It is home to former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka. The village boundaries are 131st street to the north, 183rd Street to the south, Will-Cook Road to the east, and Gougar road to the west. The village shares its boundaries with the village of Lemont (in Lemont Township, Cook County) to the north, the village of Orland Park (in Orland Township, Cook County) to the east, the village of New Lenox (in New Lenox Township, Will County) to the south, and the city of Lockport (in Lockport Township, Will County) to the west.

This is a residential and commercial suburb of Chicago in the rapidly growing Will County. It is a middle- to upper-class village. The village is served by three post offices: Lemont, Lockport, and Orland Park. Police Services are supplied by the Will County Sheriff's Police Department. Fire Services are provide by Northwest Homer Fire Protection District and the Homer Township Fire Protection District. The village's slogan is "Community & Nature...in Harmony".

There are three school districts and one high school district serving the village. Homer Community School District 33-C is the elementary district serving most of the community. Lockport and Will county school districts serve the rest. Lockport Township High School District 205 is the public high school serving the village.

Demographics

At 22.4 square miles, Homer Glen is Will County's fourth largest municipality. The current population of 24,083 and 7,716 households is based on a Special Census conducted in late 2004. The previous population figure of 22,269 from the 2000 census was partially estimated because the Village did not exist until April 2001. A Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission* 2030 forecast projects a population of 40,588, or a 54% increase. Housing construction continues to boom as carefully reviewed subdivisions are approved. According to the 2000 census information for Homer Township, the average median family income is $82,831. Over 96% of the houses are owner occupied, and over 60% of the houses are valued at over $200,000.
